Pickle Lake: The Last Frontier in Ontario

Pickle Lake Wilderness Travel Region

Pickle Lake, "Ontario's Last Frontier", is the most northerly community in Ontario that is accessible year-round by road. Vast virgin forests, never touched by a logger's axe, stretch for hundreds of miles beyond the horizon. This huge wilderness is only 300 miles from the coast of Hudson Bay, Ontario's subarctic. The region offers viewing opportunities for moose, woodland caribou, timber wolf, black bear, game birds, bald eagles, the ever-present song birds, and migratory birds such as ducks and geese.

Access Area Lakes
The Municipality operates 4 access points that all have a place to launch a boat, pitch a tent and some of the best fishing around. Badesdawa Lake, Menako Lake, Mawley Lake and Pipestone River are to the north of the Township of Pickle Lake and are all accessible by road.

In the summer visitors can take advantage of the many area lakes, sandy beaches, and the municipal park to swim, picnic, sunbathe, water-ski, fish and canoe. For those who like to commune with nature, a quiet hike through the bush along any of the numerous trails provides an opportunity for examining the flora and viewing some of the fauna in their natural habitat. Just in case you are looking for a little more excitement than soaking up the sun, there is an annual Black Fly Festival held on the July 1st weekend.

Since Pickle Lake is 'at the end of the road', there are many flyin outposts and lodges that are accessed by floatplane from town. There's also a Airport where you may fly out of. There are literally hundreds of miles of lakes, rivers and wilderness north of Pickle Lake. Canoeists will be in heaven - the number of canoe routes is endless. You can paddle directly from Pickle Lake or fly-in to your choice of many river systems and paddle back. There are plenty of expeditions to choose from. There are guided or unguided canoe, kayak, Polar Bear tours and fishing excursions. Many trips are designed to develop outdoor skills and promote a relaxed, safe and fun vacation.

For more information on the fly-in outposts, canoe outfitters, hotels and business in Pickle Lake visit Sunset Country's website dedicated to Pickle Lake or call the Township of Pickle Lake for more information at 807-928-2034.
